What Can I Expect When I get my Windshield Replaced?

Windshield Installation

  • First the installer will remove the old windshield, he or she does that by cutting it out of the car.  Special auto glass tools are used to cut out the window the installer will either have a motorized tool that cuts out windows or many will have a knife like cutter that cuts it out.
  • Next, there will be molding, the molding is the rubber part that goes around the edge of glass so the glass doesn't touch the metal or fiber glass of the vehicle, the shield is protected by the rubber molding around it.
  • Then, before inserting the New Glass you must add Urethane (which is glue) where the shield will be installed.  After you have put the glue around the edges of the window, you then need to place your windshield on the car.
  • Finally, Placing is very important because you don't want it to look uneven or not fit.  If you have the wrong glass it might not fit.
  • Also, make sure you give the right year, make and model to your auto glass installer and be sure to mention any special features like a rain sensor because there might be a special windshield for that.
  • The job takes about 45 minutes to 2 hours to complete depending on the type of car, truck or van you have.  Some vehicles have more parts to remove and put on making it a longer process.
  • Some Shops offer mobile service and they will schedule a two to four hour window for job to get done.
